Endo Dictionary…of sorts

So there are so many things that have become second nature for me to say, that I forget that sometimes they need to be explained. My husband brought to me the idea of having a short entry about the definitions of some of these terms, but instead I decided to make it a page on my blog, in order for people to refer back whenever they may need it. Enjoy- and let me know if there is anything I should add or explain here, and I will do so!

Ablation: removing of endometrial tissue and adhesions by laser and/or cauterization

Endometriosis: A disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. (Source: Mayo Clinic)

  • Stage I (Minimal Endometriosis) – characterized by isolated implants and no significant adhesions.
  • Stage II (Mild Endometriosis) – characterized by superficial implants that measure less than 5cm in diameter without significant adhesions.
  • Stage III (Moderate Endometriosis) – involves multiple deep implants, small cysts on one or both ovaries, and the presence of flimsy adhesions.
  • Stage IV (Severe Endometriosis) – consists of multiple deep implants, large cysts on one or both ovaries, and thick adhesions. (Source: Endometriosis News)

Excision Surgery- The precise cutting of endometrial tissue, cysts, and adhesions 

Flare-Up – a time where endometriosis symptoms are more prominent and painful

Laparoscopy: Explorative surgery in which a camera is put into the pelvic cavity (usually by 2 or 3 small incisions) and pictures are taken to determine diagnosis.
